Upcoming New You Events

CREW PITTSBURGH FOUNDATION

Many cancer patients cannot afford health insurance let alone the cost of a wig and/or head accessories.  A side effect of chemotherapy is hair loss and most patients will experience a drastic change in their appearance from the loss of hair on their heads, eyelashes, eyebrows etc.  Before undergoing treatments such as chemotherapy, oncology doctors and nurses highly recommend that their patients purchase a wig or head accessory so that they do not stand out in public and so they feel better about their image. To get involved with the NEW YOU charity - click here to see upcoming events.

CREW Pittsburgh has committed to supporting women with cancer in the greater Pittsburgh area as its 2003/2004 bi-annual charity.   CREW complements an existing program known as the Look Good…Feel Better Program (LGFB) offered by the American Cancer Society.  (See, www.lookgoodfeelbetter.org)  LGFB is a free program offered in cancer centers, hospitals and other community centers in which trained cosmetologists teach women how to cope with skin changes and hair loss using cosmetics and skin care products donated by the cosmetic industry.

In 2003 CREW Pittsburgh initiated a new facet to the LGFB Program called the  “New You” Program, which allows cancer patients who participate in the LGFB program to also receive a New You Satchel of Caring, which includes:  1) a commercially made soft turban; 2) a pattern on how to sew a turban; 3) a handmade scarf; 4) instructions and illustrations on how to tie a scarf; 5) support literature; and 6) inspirational poems---all packaged in a Satchel of Caring, personally designed, sewn and assembled by CREW members.  Last year, CREW members assembled 200 Satchels for women participating in the Look Good Feel Better Program.

In 2004, we will have Sewing Circles on February 29, 2004 and on August 29, 2004, at which CREW members and friends will again sew, iron, choose fringe, tassels and buttons and assemble at least 200 Satchels of Caring for women undergoing chemotherapy. Our 2004 Satchels of Caring will also include a journal personally contributed by CREW members, helpful computer websites contributed to us by cancer survivors  and possibly a relaxation compact disc.    We also  plan to  sew and assemble Satchels of Caring for distribution to certain instructors in the Look Good Feel Better Program,  who donate their time, but do not have the resources to buy mirrors, hats,  scarves,  or instructional supplies for their LGFB  classes. CREW welcomes new members, friends,  suggestions for additions  and donations to our  Satchels of Caring.

CREW’s commitment to women with cancer is not just about donating money or purchasing head accessories.  CREW’s mission is also to encourage member participation in an event each calendar quarter, which could make a difference for women with cancer.   In March 2003, CREW members raised over $3,600 for Daffodil Days, over $200 in the Race for the Cure and over $300 in the Walk for the Whisper.  We hope to double participation and donations in 2004 through our New Program Sewing Circles on February 29, 2004 and August 29, 2004 and through the American Cancer Society Daffodil Days on March 16, 2004, the Race for the Cure on May 9, 2004 and the Walk for the Whisper on September 12, 2004.

During the week beginning March 15, 2004 and ending March 20, 2004, American Cancer Society Daffodil Days celebrates spring while saving lives.  Daffodil donations are spent for cancer research, prevention, detection, advocacy and patient services/quality of life.  We are encouraging our members to DOUBLE UP WITH ANOTHER CREW MEMBER, BUSINESS, ORGANIZATION, SCHOOL OR DELIVERY VOLUNTEER TO INCREASE PARTICIPATION IN THE DAFFODIL DAYS AND MAKE A REAL DIFFERENCE IN THE FIGHT AGAINST CANCER.

Last year, Parkway Center instituted a policy that tenants wishing to have sidewalk sale had to donate 10 % of monies earned to charity.  As a result over $240.00 was contributed to American Cancer Society for our New You Program.   If any member or its employer wants to contribute to our New You Program or to help CREW make a difference for women with cancer, contact Eileen Iorio, Community Action Director at 412-566-1939 or eiorio@eckertseamans.com

2001 & 2002 -  Pittsburgh Action Against Rape (PAAR)

PAAR is a not-for-profit corporation offering confidential services at no charge to children and adults who are survivors of sexual assault, including rape, incest and child sexual abuse.  PAAR was founded in 1972 and currently serves over 2,600 survivors and their family members each year.  PAAR also provides over 800 prevention and education programs to school children and community groups annually and trains professionals in the fields of mental health, medicine, education and law enforcement to improve their services to survivors.

In addition to group and individual counseling services, PAAR maintains a 24-hour crisis hotline, accompanies victims to medical facilities during forensic medical examinations, provides legal advocacy, including accompanying the survivor each step of the way from filing a police report to testifying in court.  PAAR also offers to survivors and their support people workshops, a lecture and discussion series and wellness offerings such as yoga, mediation and relaxation.

The facts of sexual violence are:

  • One of every three girls and one of every seven boys will experience sexual abuse before the age of 18.

  • Victims of sexual violence experience depression, anxiety and stress-related illnesses at a much higher rate than the general population.

  • Victims of sexual violence are nine times more likely than the general population to attempt suicide.

PAAR's vision is to change these facts by empowering people to create a world safe from sexual violence, abuse and oppression.
